Biography
Born in Lebanon in 1954, Ghassan Zard lives and works in Beirut. Influenced by lyrical abstraction, Zard began his artistic career as a painter but later focused predominantly on sculptural works rendered in polished wood, aluminium and raw steel. Whilst his sculptures initially appear playful, on closer reflection they hint at something darker, as seen in his turtle-like figurative sculptures whose nodding featureless heads mark them as subservient and passive, as though caught in a trapping situation. Such gestures create an impression of violence or a tension hidden below the material surface. Zard has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Beirut, Paris, Munich and Venice.
